The Hohenwart family moved to Bela Krajina during the rule of the Counts of Celje in the 15th century and built Krupa Castle near the source of the Krupa River. Two members of the family were governors of Bela Krajina. The most prominent member of the family, who distinguished himself in military and administrative service and established various important church and civil institutions, was Andrej Hohenwart, who was also a governor of Celje County.
